Eat to learn? School Marm Treats says yes

Updated: Dec 5, 2019

The School Marm Treats team is stacked with family members with Michelle Russell, education faculty at Eastern Oregon University, joining forces with her student sons Kevin Russell (who serves as CFO and is a graduating senior at EOU with a history major) and Kurtis Russell (who leads marketing and is studying film in Portland). She’s also drafted her 11-year-old twin daughters, Ava and Grace, to be sous chefs. e inspiration for the School Marm Treats name came from a photo that Michelle Russell came across of her great, great (great?) grandmother in classic school-marm garb. The picture dovetailed nicely with her passion around healthy food and educating people about healthy foods and when the startup idea needed a name, it just seemed to fit.

School Marm Treats offers food education and reliable healthy choices, which are organic, vegan, low-sugar and gluten free. Food education separates School Marm Treats from other health food as they include teaching materials with all food items.

“Our target market is the shoppers of health food stores. People who are concerned about their food but still want great taste,” says Russell.

Early products include a healthy line of cheesecakes and a gluten-free, vegan pancake mix. School Marm hopes to have samples of both at the June 29 InventOR finals in Klamath Falls.

Says Russell: “My daughters have learned to do the prep work for the cheesecake and become pretty good pancake flippers”
